Terrain 2023
Welcome! The artwork you are looking at is called “Family Ties,” and it’s part of the Terrain Biennial Exhibition.
This year’s theme is Mycelium Connection. From the Terrain site: Mycelium is a thriving underground network of fungal threads, vital to many natural ecosystems. Despite its enormous geographical span, it remains invisible to most, subversively springing up from the most unexpected cracks and shadows. We ask ourselves, who and what has been overlooked, and why?
As a collage artist, I frequently work with found family photographs. I don’t know the people in any of these photographs. I (usually) don’t know where or when they were taken. Divorced from details, these subjects are free to stand in for every/any family. “Family Ties” makes visible the deep human connections that are the roots of these photographs. Pictures don’t last. People don’t last. But, just like mycelium, the connections we make with each other and our planet nourish present and future generations.
Also, mushroom people are delightful.
I created a family of collages to accompany this work, which are available to purchase. Keep checking this page, as I will add new collages throughout Terrain’s run (October 1-November 15).
